Mathea Holaus
Writer, Director and Producer
How did you get into film? What particularly attracted you to become part of this industry?
It actually started with an internship at ORF. Back then, I was thrown in at the deep end, so to speak. I can still remember my first television report. Basically, I had no idea how something like that worked. But what I noticed immediately: Film is teamwork. Back then, the cameraman, sound assistant and editor supported me accordingly so that the contribution could be broadcast. Today it’s not much different. Every wheel in a production is important, and creative work only happens anyway when several heads work together. Soon it was clear to me that I wanted to tell people’s stories. And so I was drawn more and more towards the documentary format. I love portraying people and capturing their passion, emotion and personality in sound and vision.
What distinguishes Tirol as film region for you?
In terms of landscape, Tirol is of course unique. With our documentaries we are mainly out and about, telling mountain stories and accompanying people in their passion. With its varied natural landscape and mountain scenery, Tirol already sets an exclamation mark. But what fascinates me at least as much is our cultural landscape, which is rich in tradition and customs. Where do we come from, what distinguishes us as Tyroleans and where are our roots? In my search for answers to these questions, I keep coming across inspiring people and their stories.
We are curious: Tell us your favourite location in Tirol!
It’s hard to pin it down to one place. But what captivates me every time is the feeling when I stand on a summit. That’s when you realise how small we humans actually are.
And now: The stage is yours! Please introduce yourself and your field of activity.
As a director, I accompany documentaries in the fields of sports, nature and culture and write the corresponding scripts. I mainly work for Servus TV and ORF. I love having long conversations, getting to know people, capturing their lives unvarnished and without staging in moving images, capturing their emotions and thus telling their very personal stories.
Away from television, I oversee various film projects as a producer on behalf of my small production company matheafilm. Our focus is clearly on telling stories that get under your skin and have a lasting effect. From the idea and the concept to the filmic realisation and post-production, I accompany – together with filmmakers from all over Tirol – all production steps up to the finished film.
