Award for Pitztal!
This week, the Pitztal region was awarded the Austrian Ecolabel for Destinations.
As only the third region in Tirol to receive this distinction, Pitztal now belongs to an exclusive group of just eight destinations across Austria to be honored with this environmental label—underscoring its pioneering role in sustainable tourism.
The Austrian Ecolabel for Destinations represents another milestone in the valley’s efforts toward sustainable tourism. Following a detailed review process—including the submission of over 400 documents and a two-day on-site audit—the region can now proudly display this prestigious sustainability certificate. In Pitztal, all three dimensions of sustainability are always kept in focus. In addition to ecological aspects, economic and social factors are also considered in the implementation and evaluation of all measures.
Philipp Stöfelz, Managing Director of the Pitztal Tourism Association, also highlighted the strong collaboration between stakeholders in the region during the certification process:
„This great success would not have been possible without the smooth cooperation between the tourism association, local municipalities, mountain railways, and the Kaunergrat Nature Park. A special thanks goes out to all those involved.“
Plans for greater environmental protection
Among the many sustainability efforts being made in Pitztal are a well-developed public transport system, close cooperation between the Kaunergrat Nature Park and the four Pitztal municipalities, and the ongoing activities of the Tyrolean Ibex Center. Furthermore, sustainability plays a key role in the planning and execution of events in the region.
Pascal Tangl, local habitat manager, sees the environmental label as recognition of these efforts:
„This certification is not only a significant acknowledgment of our past work but also an important milestone on our journey to further develop Pitztal as a livable and fair region.“
Josef Knabl, Chairman of the Pitztal Planning Association and Mayor of Arzl im Pitztal, agrees:
„This award is a great honor for the entire Pitztal, but it’s no reason to rest on our laurels. We want to maintain our role as a sustainability leader and continue to place a strong focus on this topic in the future.“
