Wildschönau awarded as sustainable destination
The Wildschönau tourism region has been awarded the Austrian Ecolabel for Destinations, sending a strong signal for sustainable, high-quality tourism and forward-looking conditions for green filming in Tirol.
On February 13, 2026, the Tirol region of Wildschönau received the Austrian Ecolabel for Tourism Destinations. This certification grants the high valley in the Kitzbühel Alps the official national seal of quality for sustainable tourism.
Only destinations that take joint responsibility for the environment, climate, and quality of life—together with local communities, businesses, and residents—are eligible for this certification. The criteria include environmental and climate protection, sustainable mobility, biodiversity, waste reduction, regional value creation, and social participation. Management structures and the active involvement of the local population are also considered in the comprehensive evaluation.
“The Austrian Ecolabel stands for sustainability, quality, and social responsibility. It is a visible symbol of our commitment to a liveable and future-oriented Wildschönau,” explains Michael Mairhofer, Managing Director and Destination Manager of Wildschönau Tourism.
For guests, this award ensures a consistently sustainable holiday experience—from climate-friendly mobility and eco-conscious accommodations to regional culinary offerings and nature-based leisure activities. The goal is a lasting balance between economic development, quality of life, and nature conservation. True to its roots, the high valley in the Kitzbühel Alps remains committed to its traditions and natural character—an approach that has now received official recognition.
The award also adds clear value for film productions: a destination that actively embraces sustainable mobility, regional value creation, and responsible resource use offers ideal conditions for green filming. In Wildschönau, productions benefit not only from diverse and authentic natural settings but also from strong local partners who support sustainable filming practices. This makes the region an attractive, forward-looking location for productions combining ecological responsibility with high-quality cinematic imagery.
