The tourism region of St. Johann in Tirol has been awarded the Austrian Ecolabel for tourism destinations.
The Tourism Board Kitzbüheler Alpen St. Johann in Tirol is proud to have received the Austrian Ecolabel for tourism destinations. Following intensive preparation, a two-day audit in June, and the implementation of numerous measures, the region was certified by VKI in August 2025 without any conditions.
The region’s sustainable approach offers clear advantages for film productions: A destination that focuses on eco-friendly mobility, waste reduction, and local value creation enables production companies to achieve their own environmental goals. With a wide array of natural settings combined with infrastructure and measures that conserve resources, St. Johann in Tirol has become an even more appealing filming location for productions aiming to operate sustainably.
The Austrian Ecolabel is the highest government recognition for sustainability in tourism, highlighting the region’s commitment to environmental protection, climate action, and quality of life. Currently, only eleven destinations in Austria hold this certification, including four in Tirol. Moreover, St. Johann in Tirol is among the 19 pilot regions that collaborated in 2022 on developing the criteria catalog. The certification is based on over 100 criteria in six thematic areas, encompassing both mandatory and recommended requirements. Of the 372 questions in total, 222 were comprehensively addressed.
At the same time, the region implemented numerous measures, including the launch of the Okto Wanderbus, the TeamCard, reusable cups, and shuttle buses for events, as well as an intensive dialogue with partners and the community. Sustainability is at the core of all activities: Events are organized according to Green Event guidelines, emphasizing waste prevention, regional food, and eco-friendly travel. Additionally, tourism offerings such as guided moor hikes and the KAT Walk and KAT Bike projects have been developed to promote soft tourism and enhance awareness of nature.
A particular focus lies on landscape preservation. The Tourism Association, in collaboration with nature conservation authorities, works to protect the Wilder Kaiser nature reserve and the Ramsar moorlands and raises awareness among visitors about treating nature respectfully. At the same time, the promotion of regional products plays a key role. Initiatives such as „KochArt“ and „Die Biokaiser“ support local agriculture and emphasize short transport routes.
Furthermore, the Tourism Association is committed to social sustainability. In cooperation with Lebenshilfe, people with disabilities are provided with meaningful tasks in tourism. Under the motto “Mein Yapadu: Share Moments of Happiness, Live Sustainability,” the region of St. Johann in Tirol sets a visible example of responsible tourism that benefits visitors and locals alike.
