Resource-Conscious Filming in Tyrol

Tyrol offers a wide range of filming opportunities – from alpine landscapes and natural and cultural environments to urban settings, historic buildings and contemporary architecture.

To help ensure that filming activities at these locations are planned as responsibly as possible, Cine Tirol supports filmmakers with information, contacts and connections to regional stakeholders, such as Tyrolean Green Film Consultants and sustainability coordinators from Tyrolean tourism associations.

The focus is on practical decisions throughout the production process: location selection, travel and transport, energy supply, production design, costumes, make-up, technical equipment, catering, accommodation, as well as waste prevention and waste separation. For feature film productions funded by the Austrian Film Institute, many of these aspects must already be considered under the Green Filming regulations. The following sections are therefore deliberately structured in line with these requirements.

Plan Measures Early Throughout the Production Process

Resource-conscious production processes begin during project development, ideally with a “Green Concept” and the involvement of a Green Film Consultant. Which measures are appropriate and feasible depends on the size, format and local circumstances of the respective project. The Austrian Film Institute’s criteria catalogue structures the relevant areas as follows:

Mobility. Record routes, transport requirements and vehicle movements at an early stage and reduce them where possible; consider public transport, carpooling and consolidated transport solutions; take charging infrastructure, fuel supply and parking facilities at the filming location into account.

Sets, Construction Materials, Production Design and Props. Consider reusing existing equipment and materials, renting or purchasing second-hand materials, and using reusable solutions; document the origin, availability and disposal options of the materials used.

Costume and Make-up. Similar to production design and props: consider reuse, second-hand sourcing and traceable origins of the materials and products used.

Technical Equipment. Take energy requirements, power supply and the use of technical equipment into account during production planning, for example when selecting lighting systems and generators.

Catering and Accommodation. Consider certified accommodation providers, regional suppliers, reusable containers, demand-based quantity planning and the avoidance of food waste.

Waste Management (Basic Criteria). Collect waste separately and ensure it is delivered to appropriate disposal facilities; for filming activities in sensitive natural environments, coordinate protective measures with the responsible authorities.

For the CO₂eq assessment of individual measures, particularly in the area of mobility, the Film & TV Austria CO₂ Calculator provided by EVERGREEN PRISMA, the Competence Centre for Green Filming, is available as a free public tool.

The measures outlined above are intended to support the planning of film productions. Which measures can be implemented and what effects they may have depends on the specific conditions of each project, the filming locations, and the organizational and technical framework of the production.

The specific mandatory and recommended criteria for each category, as well as the associated templates for applications and final reporting, are not covered on this page. These documents are updated regularly by the Austrian Film Institute. The current and binding versions can be found directly via the Austrian Film Institute:

Filming in Tyrol

When filming in natural and cultural environments, filming permits, access routes, protection regulations and local requirements should be clarified well in advance. This applies in particular to protected areas, sensitive ecosystems, bodies of water, forests, glaciers and agricultural land.

For preparation, we recommend:

  • Inspect the filming location at an early stage and document the required infrastructure.
  • Coordinate access routes, parking areas, power supply, sanitary facilities and collection points.
  • Clarify responsibilities for permits and protective measures.
  • Inform the film crew about codes of conduct and local requirements before filming begins.
  • After completion of filming, inspect the location together and remove all temporary installations completely.

Cine Tirol supports productions in navigating Tyrol as a filming destination and facilitates contact with the relevant authorities and organizations. Responsibility for obtaining permits, complying with official requirements, and carrying out filming activities remains with the respective production.

Green Producing and Verification

On this page, “Green Producing” is used as a collective term for the planning and implementation of practical measures aimed at reducing resource consumption and avoiding unnecessary environmental impacts in film productions. The term does not constitute an automatic award, certification, or designation of a production.

For feature film productions funded by the Austrian Film Institute, compliance with Green Filming criteria is mandatory and must be documented through a final report. The underlying criteria catalogue was developed by the Austrian Film Institute together with EVERGREEN PRISMA, the Competence Centre for Green Filming Europe of the Lower Austrian Film Commission (LAFC), and the Association of Green Film Consultants Austria (VGFCA).

As an alternative or additional option, a production may be certified in accordance with the Austrian Ecolabel Guideline UZ 76 “Green Producing in Film and Television”. Both systems distinguish between requirements applicable to the film production company and requirements applicable to the specific film production. Compliance must be documented and verified accordingly.

Productions planning a project in Tyrol and seeking professional guidance can find suitable contacts through the Green Film Consultants Austria directory provided by EVERGREEN PRISMA. Green Film Consultants whose main residence is in Tyrol are listed in the “Crew & Facilities” database.
