Die Hebamme – Auf Leben und Tod

Tyrol, 1813 - In the morally strict mountain villages, lack of hygiene is replaced by godliness. Midwife Rosa fights with commitment against childbed fever and ignorance.

A mountain village around 1815. Since the death of her husband, Rosa has been living in modest circumstances with her 16-year-old sister Anna and earning her living as a midwife. When she increasingly rebels against the catastrophic conditions during births and Anna also becomes pregnant out of wedlock and tries to take her own life out of shame and as a result of the hostility in the village, Rosa flees to the city with her sister.
On the recommendation of the progressive doctor Dr. Gennaro Salzer, she finds a job in the newly founded maternity hospital, whose aim is to provide needy women and illegitimate pregnant women with a well-cared-for birth. In return, the women are to be available to future doctors for research and teaching.
Rosa's attitude, however, quickly arouses the displeasure of the director of the institution...
