Streif – One Hell of a Ride

"Streif - One Hell of a Ride" is a story of commitment and passion. Of pride in one's ability. Of the desire to take risks, and of dealing with one's own fear. Of the intoxication of speed. And of lessons in humility.

Canadian Erik Guay, 33, is one of the big favourites to win the downhill in January 2014. A year earlier, Guay finished the Streif as the second fastest skier. Now, according to Guay, "the dream that every downhill racer lives for" should come true - a victory in Kitzbühel, on the most difficult and dangerous race course in the world. But while the downhill racers are already inspecting the Streif for the first training session, the dream is shattered: Guay has to turn down. A knee injury is giving him a hard time. He is not at the start either for the training run or for the race. Bitterly disappointed, he withdraws: "95 % is not enough for the Streif," says Guay. "You have to be able to give everything to ski it. Otherwise it throws you off."
