How did you get into film? What particularly attracted you to become part of this industry?

It all started for me with a student job. I was an assistant to an advertising photographer who was also a lighting technician at ORF and then took his assistants with him as lighting technicians. Advertising photography wasn’t my thing, but I quickly felt at home with large, complicated set-ups with lots of spotlights. At some point, I gave up my studies to focus on more sensible things.

Film is a world of its own; you need that special „spirit“ to be happy there. The working days are long and physically challenging, especially in lighting, but you are also part of a community with a lot of solidarity.

What fascinates me most is the immediacy of my work – I see my work directly on the monitor, every change makes a difference.

What distinguishes Tirol as a film region for you?

Of course the backdrop of the mountain landscape, but also the somewhat lower regions, alpine pastures, streams and forests. But if you’re honest, you can find that elsewhere too, even more beautiful, more authentic. But can you shoot there? How much effort is involved? What do I have to bring with me from far away? We can clearly score points here in Tyrol, certainly the highest density of professionals and facilities outside of Vienna.

We are curious: Tell us your favourite location in Tirol!

Difficult decision, I could immediately list my most hated locations – but of course that only has to do with logistical and other difficulties – sometimes the creatives are merciless.

I find the untouched valleys in Tyrol and especially East Tyrol the most beautiful.

And now: The stage is yours! Please introduce yourselves and your field of activity.

I’ve been in lighting for over 30 years now, starting as a lighting technician for television and now also good enough for international productions as a gaffer (head lighting technician). At the same time, I have built up the most technically advanced rental company in Austria. Working on and in my company gives me a lot of pleasure, there is always something new being tried out, built and improved.

Training is very important to me, you are nothing without your crew. I’ve almost always been very lucky and had the right instinct to find people who share this passion and can put up with my perfectionism.
